MAYFAIR, Fresno County — A proposed pedestrian hybrid beacon near Mayfair Elementary at First Street and Home Avenue is still listed by the City of Fresno as a location in design.
A high-intensity activated crosswalk, commonly called a HAWK signal, typically stays dark until someone presses a pedestrian button, then displays warning and stop indications to motorists for a crossing. Fresno Public Works identifies First and Home among the city’s planned pedestrian safety beacon locations, and the project has been associated with student routes to Mayfair Elementary and nearby schools.
The designation ‘in design’ is important: it does not mean the beacon has been installed or is operating today. Final construction schedules and funding can change, and residents should rely on the existing traffic controls until a new device is formally activated.
What local families and residents should know
Families who walk or bike to school should follow posted signals, watch for turning traffic and report hazardous crossing conditions to the appropriate local agency. The city’s public works page provides information about how HAWK signals function and where other installations are planned.
